The CityLife district in Milan stands proudly as a residential, commercial and business development with residences designed by Zaha Hadid, and one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in Europe. In 2016 Listone Giordano, as part of Milan Contract District (MCD) had the pleasure of collaborating with other top Italian design companies to complete Penthouse One-11, a double-height luxurious penthouse over two stories.

The apartment spans two floors over 300m2, features incredible views over the city and adjoining park, and is a genuine ‘sensory apartment’: a design concept used by MCD to offer a unique and captivating indoor experience.  As such, Penthouse One-11 was the result of both the MCD’s innovation and the excellence of services offered by the companies involved.

The initial issue faced by designers was how the penthouse would be composed: what kind of aesthetic was to be agreed upon? What kind of story would this penthouse tell? An inclusive approach was decided on, one that refused to ignore the surrounding high-quality residential units, the building’s design, and the organisation and use of interior space and light.

Introducing Slide

Listone Giordano’s Slide flooring was specified as part of the penthouse’s interior design. Slide Tortora – a ‘turtledove’ oak colour – coats the floors and a wall like a second skin, an engineered oak-topped board with diamond, triangular and trapezoidal laying patterns that represent an eloquent twist on contemporary parquet flooring, echoing the residence’s unique and prestigious architectural and design features. Designed by Daniele Lago, Slide combines mathematics and geometry with parquet, creating a unique flooring pattern.

Slide unifies the surface of the living space, covering every area except the entrance areas and kitchen – yet no one piece is the same as the next. This design choice was born from the desire to transform classic parquet flooring and present an evolved flooring design. In addition, Listone Giordano’s oak boards do not simply lie horizontal, but can be used vertically too, as an upright display of Slide gracefully covers one of the penthouse’s bedroom walls. Slide goes beyond a flooring option and becomes an elegant surface system.

“We are delighted to continue the partnership with Milan District Contract with such an important project as our penthouse Penthouse One-11,” said Armando Borghi, CEO of CityLife. “The residential complex of CityLife is unique in the current real estate landscape: Milano Contract District through this partnership will help us to enhance our offerings even more, aimed at a demanding audience and great expectations.”

Listone Giordano’s Slide is an excellent addition to Penthouse One-11 and provides a breath-taking example of forward-thinking Italian flooring design. Slide’s heat-treated oak sits comfortably in harmony with rough iron sheets, stone surfaces, transparent glazing and glossy and matt lacquered panels throughout a penthouse that, thanks to MCD, has real architectural merit.
